WHAT IS BUTOH BUFON?
Two extreme performance forms meet & merge - sometimes succeeding, sometimes surprising, always intriguing.
Butoh is a modern dance form that arose in the 1950's in Japan. It is a discipline with strong traditions - culturally, physically, and spiritually.
Bufon is a broad performance realm rooted in satire and mockery
Both butoh dance and bufon Theater often use white make-up on the performers exposed body parts, erasing selfness & becoming a solid being. Inner images float up to the skin surface, some beautiful, some grotesque in their range of expression. Their theatrical effect is to draw pictures in the theater frame.
